What to expect

This style of yoga is gentle, safe, and requires no special equipment. By practicing this style of yoga, students realize benefits which include mindfulness, concentration, physical ease, emotional balance, and ultimately peace of mind and happiness.

Working on an individual basis to start, each class follows the same outline with routines coordinated with the individuals level of development. Students will participate in five essential yoga practices: music, breathing practices, cleansing practices, body postures, and deep relaxation. These practices are designed to strengthen and stretch the entire musculoskeletal system, balance the nervous system, increase breathing efficiency, improve body awareness, improve communication skills, increase each student’s ability to self regulate, and of course provide a relaxing and engaging experience!

Who can be served by this practice?

Any individual with special needs is welcome to attend! The program is suited for people aged 0 to adult with all levels of ability welcome. Populations served include, but are not limited to: individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Delays, Neurological Disorders, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, and other physical and mental developmental challenges. Students in wheelchairs are welcome to attend, as are non-verbal students.

From the book Yoga for the Special Child by Sonia Sumar: “By letting go of our fears and negativity, and learning to see the best in ourselves and others, we can provide a powerful impetus for positive change. It is through this ability to go beyond preconceived notions and external appearances that we can transform our lives, and those of our children. May all the parents of special children develop this ability, and may they and their children experience true peace and happiness.”

A quick video of Molly doing a fantastic job during portions of her Yoga for the Special Child® practice at South Shore Conservatory in Massachusetts. This kid is amazing; on a whim I stuck my phone on the window ledge, and was thrilled to see that it captured some of her fantastic work.

The Development of Yoga for the Special Child

Sonia Sumar worked with her own daughter Roberta, and individual with Down Syndrome, and discovered a natural and intuitive way to unlock her daughter’s potential. Throughout the years she refined her methods, and is now a world-renowned yoga teacher who trains passionately throughout the world.
